QUALITY MEATS*
a theatre company
Quality Meats is a company founded by two directors who create their work in radical response to each other. Rooted in international collaboration, our repertory of work ranges from re-imagined classics to devised new pieces with an emphasis on ensemble creation and physical imagination. It celebrates the forceful collision of the stories and theatrical cultures of their diverse artists. Founded in 2005, the company is made up of a porous collective of theatre artists, cooks, wanderers, circus folk and flamenco dancers who have thus far come from Australia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, Canada, Singapore and the U.S.

Born and raised on the north shore of Puerto Rico, Javier attended public schools and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for ten years. At the University of Puerto Rico, he studied French, Postmodern Dance and Theater. Trained mostly as an actor and dancer, he developed a particular interest in the process of making theater through the use of the body and its relation to objects, paying special attention to the collision between stage imagery and words. While in college, Javier had the opportunity to meet and study with Argentinean director Rubén Pires and the Ecuadorian Group Malayerba, two of his major influences. Studying under Rosa Luisa Márquez, he worked as a teacher in several elementary schools and communities. At twenty-two he directed his first play, La edad de la ciruela, which had a significant impact on PR’s theater community due to the clandestine nature of the event. Only thirty-five people were allowed each night into the performance, which took place in a condemned theater where restoration had stopped for five years. At twenty-three Javier moved to NY to obtain his MFA in Directing. He is the author of four original plays and adaptations. email him at javier@qualitymeats.org
